Claudine (film)
Claudine is a 1974 American romantic comedy-drama film directed by John Berry, and starring Diahann Carroll as Claudine Price, a single mother of six living on welfare in Harlem. James Earl Jones stars as Rupert "Roop" Marshall, a garbage collector who becomes Claudine's love interest.
The film explores themes of poverty, single motherhood, and the challenges faced by African American families in the 1970s. Claudine struggles to make ends meet while navigating the bureaucracy of the welfare system, a system which penalizes her for finding employment or forming relationships that might be perceived as providing financial support.
The screenplay was written by Lester Pine and Tina Pine. The soundtrack, composed and produced by Curtis Mayfield, features Gladys Knight & the Pips singing several songs, including the hit "On and On". Diahann Carroll was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance.
