Abdul Majid Khan (detainee)
Abdul Majid Khan is a Pakistani citizen who was held in extrajudicial detention by the United States government at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp in Cuba. He was captured in Pakistan in 2002 and transferred to Guantanamo Bay in September 2006. He was initially designated as a high-value detainee.
Khan pleaded guilty to material support for terrorism in 2012, agreeing to cooperate with U.S. authorities. He provided detailed testimony about his time working for al-Qaeda, including his role in planning attacks and transporting explosives. In 2022, he was formally sentenced to 26 years in prison, but due to his cooperation and time already served, he was eligible for release.
His case is notable because of the significant intelligence he provided to U.S. authorities and the complexities surrounding his eventual sentencing and repatriation. As of 2023, he was repatriated to Belize after a deal was struck between the U.S. government and Belize.
