Anne Madden (artist)

Anne Madden (1932-2018) was an Irish painter, known for her abstract expressionist style, often exploring themes of landscape, mythology, and ancient sites. Born in London, England, she spent her childhood in Chile before moving to Ireland.

Madden studied at the Chelsea School of Art in London and later lived and worked in France and Ireland. Her work is characterized by bold colors, energetic brushstrokes, and a sense of depth and mystery. She often used a variety of media including oil, acrylic, and collage.

Throughout her career, Madden exhibited extensively, both nationally and internationally, including solo shows at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA) and the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris. Her work is held in numerous public and private collections, including IMMA, the National Gallery of Ireland, and the Ulster Museum. She was a member of Aosdána, an affiliation of Irish artists.

Madden's work often reflected her interest in the Neolithic and ancient cultures, incorporating elements of their symbolism and imagery into her abstract compositions. She was married to the Irish painter Louis le Brocquy.
