Amba language (Solomon Islands)

The Amba language, also known as Buma, is an Oceanic language spoken on the island of Utupua in the Temotu Province of the Solomon Islands. It belongs to the Reefs – Santa Cruz languages within the Oceanic language family.

Amba is spoken by a relatively small number of people, and like many indigenous languages, it faces challenges related to language maintenance and preservation in the face of the increasing influence of dominant languages such as Pijin (Solomon Islands Pidgin).

Documentation of the Amba language, including its grammar, vocabulary, and oral traditions, is limited compared to some other languages in the region. Linguistic research and community-based language revitalization efforts are important for ensuring the survival of Amba and preserving its cultural heritage.
