Alphabetical (game show)
Alphabetical is a British television quiz show that originally aired on ITV from 1997 to 2006, hosted by Mike Smith. The show was revived by UTV in 2016, hosted by Jeff Stelling. The core game involves two teams answering general knowledge questions that are linked in some way to the letters of the alphabet.
Gameplay:
The two teams compete in a series of rounds. Each round presents a category or topic associated with a letter of the alphabet (e.g., "A" for "Animals"). Teams take turns answering questions related to that category. Correct answers earn points.
The unique element of Alphabetical is that the questions often require answers to be given in alphabetical order based on the first letter of each word within the answer. For example, if the category is "Capitals of Europe," and the answer required is three capitals, the team must name them in alphabetical order (e.g., Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen).
Scoring:
Teams score points for each correct answer. In some rounds, bonus points may be awarded for answering all the questions correctly or for identifying the link between the questions. The team with the highest score at the end of all the rounds wins the game.
Format Variations:
Over the years, there have been slight variations in the rules and format of the show. These might involve different types of rounds, changes to the point scoring system, or the introduction of new challenges.
Host History:
- Mike Smith (1997-2006)
- Jeff Stelling (2016-)
