Alexander Reid (art dealer)

Alexander Reid (1854-1928) was a Scottish art dealer, best known for his role in introducing Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art to Britain. He was a significant figure in the late 19th and early 20th century art world, championing artists like Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, and Édouard Manet.

Born in Glasgow, Reid initially worked as a clerk. He travelled to Paris in the 1880s, where he became involved in the art scene and worked for the influential dealer Boussod, Valadon & Cie (formerly Goupil & Cie), alongside Vincent van Gogh. This period profoundly shaped his artistic tastes and connections.

In 1889, Reid returned to Glasgow and established his own art gallery, initially called Reid & Lefevre. He later formed a partnership with Alex Martin, renaming the business Alex Reid & Lefevre, and subsequently Reid and Sons. The gallery became a vital platform for exhibiting and selling modern French art in Britain, particularly in Glasgow and London.

Reid was instrumental in fostering an appreciation for Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works among British collectors. He organized exhibitions showcasing the work of the artists he had encountered in Paris, often facing initial skepticism and resistance from the British public. He also played a key role in advising and assisting private collectors in building their collections of modern art.

Beyond his commercial activities, Reid was a close friend and supporter of several artists, including Van Gogh, who painted Reid's portrait in 1887. This portrait is a testament to their close relationship and Reid's importance in Van Gogh's life during his time in Paris. Reid also supported Scottish artists and promoted their work alongside the French masters.

Alexander Reid’s dedication to introducing modern art to Britain significantly influenced the development of British art collecting and appreciation, establishing him as a key figure in the art market during his time. He died in 1928, leaving a legacy as a pioneering art dealer and advocate for avant-garde artistic movements.
