Alexander MacDonald (Scottish bishop)

Alexander MacDonald (1751-1837) was a Scottish Roman Catholic bishop. He served as the Vicar Apostolic of the Highland District in Scotland from 1819 until his death in 1837.

Born in Knoydart, Inverness-shire, MacDonald was educated at the Scots College in Rome and ordained to the priesthood in 1774. He served initially in mission stations in the Scottish Highlands, ministering to a largely Gaelic-speaking Catholic population facing considerable prejudice and hardship. He was known for his dedication, piety, and pastoral care.

In 1819, MacDonald was appointed Vicar Apostolic of the Highland District and consecrated Titular Bishop of Polemonium. As Vicar Apostolic, he was responsible for the spiritual welfare of Catholics in the Highland region, overseeing the clergy, administering the sacraments, and promoting Catholic education. He navigated the challenges of administering a geographically dispersed and often impoverished population, relying on the support of both local benefactors and overseas funding.

Bishop MacDonald is remembered as a significant figure in the history of the Catholic Church in Scotland, particularly for his unwavering commitment to serving the needs of the Highland Catholic community during a period of significant social and religious change. He played a crucial role in maintaining the faith and strengthening the Catholic presence in the region. He was succeeded as Vicar Apostolic by James Kyle.
