Nigeria

Nigeria, officially the Federal Republic of Nigeria, is a country in West Africa, bordering Niger in the north, Chad in the northeast, Cameroon in the east, and Benin in the west. Its southern coast lies on the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean. It is a federal republic comprising 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, where the capital, Abuja, is located. Lagos is the largest city in Nigeria.

Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa and the seventh most populous country in the world. It is a multi-ethnic and multicultural state with over 500 languages spoken, though English is the official language. The country is roughly divided between a predominantly Muslim north and a predominantly Christian south, with significant minorities practicing indigenous religions throughout the country.

Nigeria's economy is the largest in Africa, driven primarily by its petroleum industry. Other significant sectors include agriculture, telecommunications, and services. However, despite its economic size, a large portion of the population lives in poverty.

Nigeria's history includes pre-colonial kingdoms and states, British colonial rule beginning in the 19th century, and independence in 1960. The country experienced a civil war (Biafran War) from 1967 to 1970. Since its independence, Nigeria has faced political instability, including military coups and periods of civilian rule.

Nigeria is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, the African Union, and the United Nations. It plays a significant role in regional and international affairs. The country faces numerous challenges, including corruption, insecurity, and environmental degradation. Despite these challenges, Nigeria is recognized for its cultural richness, its contributions to arts and literature (including Nollywood, the Nigerian film industry), and its potential for economic growth and development.
