Alex McKinnon (rugby league)
Alex McKinnon (born 5 March 1992) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer. Primarily a second-row forward, his career was tragically cut short due to a severe spinal injury sustained in a match in 2014.
McKinnon began his professional career with the Newcastle Knights in the National Rugby League (NRL). Prior to joining the Knights, he played for the St. George Illawarra Dragons. He represented New South Wales at the junior representative level.
On March 24, 2014, while playing for the Newcastle Knights against the Melbourne Storm, McKinnon suffered a career-ending spinal cord injury. The injury, sustained in a three-man tackle, resulted in paralysis and required extensive rehabilitation.
Following his injury, McKinnon has become an advocate for disability awareness and spinal injury research. He has worked with the NRL and other organizations to promote player safety and has become a prominent figure in the community. He has also pursued further education and held administrative roles within the Newcastle Knights.
McKinnon's resilience and determination in the face of adversity have made him an inspirational figure in the rugby league community and beyond. His story has highlighted the risks involved in professional sports and the importance of ongoing research into spinal injuries.
