Akshar (Swaminarayan)

In the Swaminarayan tradition of Hinduism, "Akshar" (Sanskrit: अक्षर, meaning "imperishable" or "eternal") holds significant theological weight. It refers to two primary concepts:

  1. Aksharbrahman: Aksharbrahman is considered a state of ultimate spiritual attainment, a divine abode, and a form of God. Within the Swaminarayan philosophy, Aksharbrahman is conceived as both a place and a being. As a place, it is the eternal abode of God, Swaminarayan. As a being, Aksharbrahman is the ideal devotee, perfectly realized and eternally serving God. It is through the grace of God that an individual soul can attain Aksharbrahman.

  2. The Guru: The term "Akshar" is also used to refer to the Gunatit Guru, the lineage of spiritual successors to Swaminarayan. These gurus are considered embodiments of Aksharbrahman on earth, and are believed to be the perfect devotees who lead devotees to spiritual liberation and to ultimately realizing Aksharbrahman. They are seen as a living link to God and a vital component in the path to salvation according to the Swaminarayan philosophy. Their teachings and guidance are essential for devotees seeking to understand and achieve Aksharbrahman.
