Ait Zineb

The Ait Zineb are a Berber tribe located in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco. They are part of the larger Ait Atta confederation, a semi-nomadic group with a rich cultural heritage and a historical reputation for independence. The Ait Zineb traditionally practice transhumance, moving between higher pastures in the summer and lower valleys in the winter with their livestock, primarily sheep and goats. Their society is traditionally structured around tribal councils (jmaa) that make decisions affecting the community. Agriculture, including terraced farming of cereals, fruits, and vegetables, also plays a significant role in their economy. The Ait Zineb, like other Berber groups, have a distinct language, Tamazight, and maintain strong cultural traditions in music, dance, and handicrafts, including weaving. They are known for their resilience in adapting to the harsh mountainous environment and for preserving their cultural identity. Contemporary challenges include access to education and healthcare, economic opportunities, and the preservation of their unique cultural heritage in the face of globalization.
