Landmarks (The University of Texas at Austin)
Landmarks is the public art program of The University of Texas at Austin. Established in 2008, Landmarks aims to enrich the campus environment and engage the university community through the commission, acquisition, and preservation of public art. The collection includes sculptures, paintings, and other works of art by a diverse range of internationally recognized artists.
Landmarks' mission is to enhance the aesthetic character of the campus, foster dialogue and critical thinking, and serve as a catalyst for learning and inspiration. The program selects art that is both visually compelling and conceptually engaging, seeking to create a collection that reflects the university's values and aspirations.
The collection is accessible to the public and serves as a resource for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Guided tours and educational programs are offered to promote understanding and appreciation of the artwork. Landmarks collaborates with academic departments and other campus organizations to integrate the art into the curriculum and enhance the overall learning experience.
Key objectives of Landmarks include:
- Acquiring significant works of art that complement the university's architecture and landscape.
- Preserving and maintaining the collection to ensure its long-term accessibility.
- Providing educational opportunities that deepen understanding and appreciation of public art.
- Fostering collaboration and engagement with the university community and the broader public.
The Landmarks collection continues to grow and evolve, contributing to the University of Texas at Austin's reputation as a leading center for education, research, and artistic expression.
