Agona (clan)

The Agona clan is one of the eight major matrilineal clans (abusua) within the Akan people of Ghana. Matrilineal descent determines clan membership, meaning children belong to the clan of their mother.

The Agona clan is traditionally associated with the color red and certain totems, including the parrot (ako) and the snail (adwene). These totems are considered sacred and are often invoked in rituals and ceremonies associated with the clan. Members of the Agona clan are expected to uphold certain values and responsibilities, including loyalty to the clan and adherence to traditional customs.

Historically, the Agona clan played a significant role in Akan political and social structures. Members of the clan have traditionally held positions of power and influence, including chieftaincy roles. The clan system continues to be an important aspect of Akan identity and social organization.

Variations in spelling and pronunciation may exist depending on the specific Akan dialect being spoken. Research into specific Akan subgroups is advised for more localized information about the Agona clan.
