São João Baptista (Brava)
São João Baptista is a town located on the island of Brava, in Cape Verde. It is situated on the southeastern coast of the island. Historically, it served as one of the main settlements on Brava, though it is now smaller than Vila Nova Sintra (also known as Nova Sintra).
The town's name, São João Baptista, is Portuguese for Saint John the Baptist. The settlement, like many places in Cape Verde, bears a Portuguese religious name reflecting the islands' colonial history.
São João Baptista is primarily a fishing village, and its economy is largely based on fishing and small-scale agriculture. Its remote location on Brava has contributed to a slower pace of development compared to other parts of Cape Verde.
The town can be reached by road, though the roads leading to it are often rugged and challenging, reflecting the island's mountainous terrain. It is a relatively quiet and isolated settlement, offering a glimpse into traditional Cape Verdean life.
