Puisortoq

Puisortoq is an extremely rare warm, dry, foehn wind that occurs in Greenland, specifically along its western coast. It is characterized by rapid temperature increases and a significant decrease in humidity. The name "Puisortoq" is Greenlandic in origin, although the exact meaning and etymology are not widely documented.

These winds descend from the Greenland Ice Sheet, warming adiabatically as they sink. This adiabatic warming results in temperatures that can be surprisingly high, particularly during the winter months, and can lead to localized melting of snow and ice.

Due to the geography of Greenland, the Puisortoq effect is relatively localized and doesn't affect the entire country uniformly. Its appearance is difficult to predict and its duration can vary significantly. While it can provide a temporary respite from the harsh Arctic conditions, the sudden temperature fluctuations can also present challenges for infrastructure and ecosystems. The wind is not a common or widespread phenomenon, distinguishing it from more globally recognized foehn winds like the Chinook in North America or the Föhn in the Alps. Studying the Puisortoq wind can contribute to a better understanding of climate dynamics and the impact of foehn winds in polar regions.
