Abu Hreik
Abu Hreik (also transliterated as Abu Hrayk, Abu Helek, or similar variations) is a predominantly Shia Muslim suburb located in the southern suburbs of Beirut, Lebanon. It is part of the Dahieh region, a densely populated area known for its strong Hezbollah presence and support base.
The area experienced significant damage and displacement during the 2006 Lebanon War, due to its perceived association with Hezbollah's military infrastructure. Reconstruction efforts were substantial in the aftermath of the war, largely funded by sources considered to be aligned with Hezbollah.
Abu Hreik is characterized by its high population density and a mix of residential and commercial activity. It houses a significant number of displaced persons from other parts of Lebanon, particularly from the South. Social services and community organizations play a vital role in the area, reflecting the influence of Hezbollah in local governance and welfare.
The suburb faces challenges related to infrastructure, urban planning, and the socioeconomic conditions of its residents. Political dynamics and sectarian affiliations significantly shape the social and economic landscape of Abu Hreik.
