6th Army (France)
The French 6th Army was a field army of the French Army during World War I and World War II.
During World War I, the 6th Army was formed in August 1914, initially under the command of General Michel-Joseph Maunoury. It played a crucial role in the First Battle of the Marne in September 1914, helping to halt the German advance on Paris. Throughout the war, it participated in numerous major battles on the Western Front, including the Battle of the Somme. After the war, it remained a component of the French Army.
In World War II, the 6th Army was reformed. It participated in the Battle of France in 1940, facing the German invasion. Due to the rapid German advance and strategic setbacks, the 6th Army, along with the rest of the French military, was overwhelmed, leading to the Armistice of 22 June 1940. After the armistice, the 6th Army was disbanded.
The 6th Army represents a significant component of the French Army during both World Wars, playing a key defensive role in 1914 and experiencing defeat in 1940.
