5th Light Horse Regiment (Australia)

The 5th Light Horse Regiment was a mounted infantry regiment of the Australian Army, originally raised for service during World War I. Formed in August 1914 as part of the Australian Imperial Force (AIF), the regiment saw active service in the Gallipoli Campaign and the Sinai and Palestine Campaign. The regiment was initially composed of squadrons raised in Queensland and New South Wales.

During the Gallipoli Campaign, the 5th Light Horse served dismounted, fighting primarily in a defensive role. They were involved in heavy fighting at Quinn's Post and other sectors of the Anzac front. Following the evacuation from Gallipoli in December 1915, the regiment was reorganized and transferred to Egypt to take part in the Sinai and Palestine Campaign.

In the Middle East, the 5th Light Horse participated in numerous battles and engagements, including the Battle of Romani, the Battle of Beersheba, and the capture of Damascus. Their role typically involved reconnaissance, screening, and offensive operations. They were known for their horsemanship, endurance, and fighting spirit.

Following the end of World War I, the 5th Light Horse Regiment returned to Australia and was disbanded. However, the regiment was later re-raised as a part-time unit within the Citizen Military Forces (CMF), later known as the Army Reserve. As a CMF unit, the regiment continued to exist in various forms until the late 20th century, fulfilling training and reserve roles. The lineage of the regiment is maintained through subsequent units of the Australian Army.

The 5th Light Horse Regiment's battle honors include Gallipoli 1915, Romani, Magdhaba-Rafah, Beersheba, and Damascus, among others. These honors recognize the regiment's contributions and sacrifices during its service.
