The 23rd Division (German Empire) was a unit of the Prussian Army, part of the German Imperial Army, formed in 1816 as the 12th Division (Silesian) and redesignated as the 23rd Division in 1818. The division was headquartered in Breslau. It was part of V Corps.
The division participated in the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71.
At the outbreak of World War I in 1914, the 23rd Division was mobilized and sent to the Western Front. It saw action in the early battles along the French border, including the Battle of Neufchâteau. Throughout the war, it fought primarily on the Western Front, participating in numerous battles, including the Battle of the Somme, the Third Battle of Ypres, and the German spring offensive of 1918.
The division was dissolved in 1919 as part of the demobilization of the German Army after World War I.
