Ernst Leman

Ernst Leman (1869-1947) was a German general who served in both World War I and World War II. He is primarily known for his command during the Siege of Leningrad in World War II.

Leman entered the Prussian Army in 1889 and served in various roles throughout his early career. During World War I, he served primarily in staff positions.

In the interwar period, Leman remained in the Reichswehr and later the Wehrmacht. As a General der Infanterie during World War II, he commanded the 11th Infantry Division at the beginning of the war. He later took command of various corps-level formations. Leman played a significant role in the siege of Leningrad as a commander in Army Group North. He was eventually removed from his command for perceived failures. He spent time in the Führerreserve and eventually retired. After the war, he was captured by Soviet forces and died in a prisoner-of-war camp.
