1987 U.S. Open (golf)
The 1987 U.S. Open was the 87th U.S. Open, held June 18–21 at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, California. Scott Simpson won his only major championship, one stroke ahead of runners-up Tom Watson and Chip Beck.
The Olympic Club's Lake Course, known for its demanding layout and unforgiving rough, played host to the tournament. The course proved difficult throughout the week, with high scores prevalent.
Simpson, who started the final round four strokes behind leader Ben Crenshaw, posted a final round of 68 (-2), while Crenshaw struggled to a 76 (+6), falling out of contention. Watson made a late charge, birdieing the 16th and 17th holes to pull within one shot of Simpson. On the 18th hole, Watson's approach shot landed in the rough, and he was unable to save par, finishing one stroke back. Beck also finished one stroke behind Simpson after a final round 68.
Notable players who finished further back included Greg Norman, Jack Nicklaus, and defending champion Raymond Floyd.
This U.S. Open is remembered for the challenging conditions of the Olympic Club, Simpson's steady play in the final round, and Watson's near miss on the 18th hole. Simpson's victory marked a significant moment in his career, solidifying his place among major champions.
