Zhan Garden (Nanjing)

Zhan Garden, also known as Zhan Yuan (瞻园), is a historical garden located in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China. It is one of the most well-preserved and renowned classical gardens in the city. Zhan Garden dates back to the early Ming Dynasty, when it served as the residence of Xu Da, a prominent general who aided Zhu Yuanzhang in establishing the Ming Dynasty. Originally, it was part of Xu Da's mansion.

Over the centuries, Zhan Garden underwent several changes in ownership and renovations. During the Qing Dynasty, it was extensively rebuilt and expanded, acquiring its current appearance, which is a prime example of traditional Jiangnan garden design.

The garden is characterized by its intricate layout, featuring rockeries, ponds, pavilions, corridors, and a variety of flora. It incorporates elements of both landscape and architecture, creating a harmonious and aesthetically pleasing environment. Key features include artificial hills, winding streams, and carefully positioned buildings that offer picturesque views.

Zhan Garden is also historically significant for its role in the Taiping Rebellion. During the mid-19th century, it served as the headquarters of the Eastern King, Yang Xiuqing, a prominent leader in the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. Consequently, parts of the garden suffered damage during the conflict. Later restoration efforts have aimed to preserve and showcase this historical aspect.

Today, Zhan Garden is a popular tourist destination, offering visitors a glimpse into traditional Chinese garden design and a connection to Nanjing's rich history. It serves as a protected historical and cultural site, playing an important role in preserving China's artistic and architectural heritage.
