Zernograd
Zernograd is a town and the administrative center of Zernogradsky District in Rostov Oblast, Russia. It is located in the southeastern part of the oblast, in the Manych steppe, approximately 80 kilometers southeast of Rostov-on-Don.
Founded in 1929 as a settlement around a large grain research institute (hence the name, which translates roughly to "Grain City"), Zernograd grew into a significant agricultural and scientific center. The town is known for its focus on agricultural research and development, particularly in the field of grain production. The North Caucasus Machine-Testing Station and the All-Russian Research Institute of Grain Crops named after I.G. Kalinenko are located in Zernograd.
Zernograd has a population of approximately 25,000 people (as of various estimations in the early 2020s). The economy is primarily driven by agriculture, agricultural research, and related industries. Infrastructure includes educational institutions, healthcare facilities, cultural centers, and transportation links connecting it to other parts of Rostov Oblast and Russia.
