Psalm 12

Psalm 12 is a psalm included in the Book of Psalms in the Hebrew Bible, also part of the Old Testament in the Christian Bible. It is categorized as a lament, although it also contains elements of confidence. Traditionally attributed to King David, the psalm expresses distress over the prevalence of deceit and wickedness in society, and contrasts these with the trustworthy and pure word of God.

The psalm opens with a plea for divine intervention, lamenting the disappearance of the godly and the faithfulness from among humanity. It describes the widespread use of flattery and double-heartedness, where people speak insincerely and manipulate with their words. A turning point occurs in verse 5, where God speaks. God promises to protect the oppressed and needy from their oppressors. This declaration brings reassurance and hope.

The psalm concludes by contrasting the deceitful words of humans with the pure and reliable words of God, which are likened to silver refined seven times in a furnace. It affirms that God will preserve the righteous from the wicked generation, even though wickedness continues to prevail all around.

Psalm 12 has been interpreted in various ways throughout history. Some see it as a reflection of specific historical circumstances during David's reign or later periods of societal corruption. Others view it more broadly as a timeless expression of the conflict between good and evil, and the importance of trusting in God's promises during times of adversity.
