Chinook (provincial electoral district)

Chinook was a provincial electoral district in Alberta, Canada, mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta using the first-past-the-post voting system. It existed for a relatively short period, being formed and dissolved within a few decades.

The district was created in 1971, largely from parts of the former electoral district of Medicine Hat. Chinook existed for the 1971, 1975, and 1979 provincial elections.

The electoral district was named for the Chinook wind, a warm, dry wind that prevails in southern Alberta.

It was abolished prior to the 1982 provincial election, with its territory being redistributed into the electoral districts of Medicine Hat and Cypress-Redcliff. The riding's relatively short existence reflects boundary adjustments undertaken to reflect population shifts.
