Zellers

Zellers was a Canadian discount department store chain, founded in 1928 by Walter P. Zeller. It operated primarily in shopping malls and plazas across Canada, offering a variety of general merchandise, including clothing, housewares, furniture, and toys. At its peak, Zellers was one of the largest retailers in Canada.

The company was acquired by Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) in 1978. In 2011, HBC sold the leases for most Zellers locations to Target Corporation, with Target Canada subsequently operating in those spaces until its closure in 2015. HBC retained a small number of Zellers locations, primarily those within its Bay department stores.

Following Target's exit from Canada, HBC began to reintroduce Zellers as a store-within-a-store concept inside select Hudson's Bay locations, beginning in 2023. This reintroduction aimed to recapture the brand's nostalgia and appeal to Canadian shoppers. The revamped Zellers stores focused on offering value-priced apparel, home goods, and other everyday items.

The name "Zellers" remains a recognizable brand in Canada, associated with discount retail and a part of Canadian retail history.
