Yoshio Kimura (shogi)

Yoshio Kimura (木村義雄, Kimura Yoshio, November 18, 1905 – November 18, 1986) was a Japanese professional shogi player, ranked 14-dan. He is best known for being the first lifetime Meijin (永世名人) in shogi history.

Kimura was born in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture. He became a professional shogi player in 1924 at the age of 19 and was promoted to 14-dan, a rank only posthumously awarded, in 1986. He held the Meijin title thirteen times, a record that stood for many years, and was also known for his innovative strategies and tactics. He dominated the shogi world during the early to mid-Showa period.

Kimura's contributions to shogi were significant, not only for his playing strength but also for his efforts in promoting the game. He was inducted into the Shogi Hall of Fame and remains a highly respected figure in the history of professional shogi.

His disciples include several notable professional shogi players. He is remembered for his strong character and dedication to the game.
