Women Talking (film)

Women Talking is a 2022 American drama film directed by Sarah Polley. It is based on the 2018 novel of the same name by Miriam Toews, which itself is inspired by real-life events within the Manitoba Colony, a Mennonite community in Bolivia.

The film centers on a group of women in an isolated religious colony who gather in a hayloft to debate their options after discovering they have been systematically drugged and sexually assaulted by the men in their community. The women must decide whether to stay and fight, forgive, or leave the only world they've ever known. Their discussion revolves around questions of faith, trauma, community, forgiveness, and the future for themselves and their daughters.

The cast includes Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, Judith Ivey, and Ben Whishaw. Frances McDormand served as a producer on the film.

Women Talking premiered at the 49th Telluride Film Festival on September 2, 2022, and was released in the United States on December 23, 2022, by United Artists Releasing. The film received critical acclaim for its performances, direction, and screenplay, and was nominated for several awards, including the Academy Award for Best Picture and winning the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
