William Paterson (trade unionist)

William Paterson was a Scottish-born American trade unionist and communist political activist. He is best known for his involvement in organizing African American workers and his prominent role in the International Labor Defense (ILD), particularly in its campaigns against racial discrimination and injustice in the American South.

Paterson joined the Communist Party USA in the 1920s and dedicated his life to advocating for the rights of marginalized workers. He played a key role in the ILD's efforts to defend the Scottsboro Boys, nine African American teenagers falsely accused of rape in Alabama in 1931. Paterson’s legal expertise and organizational skills were crucial in bringing national and international attention to the case, exposing the racial bias inherent in the Southern justice system.

He served as the National Secretary of the International Labor Defense from 1932 until its dissolution in 1946. During this time, he tirelessly worked to mobilize support for victims of racial violence and discrimination, organizing legal defense, protests, and public awareness campaigns. He also wrote extensively on the topics of racial equality and workers' rights.

Paterson’s work was significant in raising awareness about the plight of African Americans in the Jim Crow South and contributed to the broader struggle for civil rights in the United States. While his affiliation with the Communist Party made him a controversial figure, his dedication to fighting racial injustice remains an important aspect of his legacy.
