William Murray (died 1562)

William Murray (died 1562) was a Scottish courtier and keeper of Stirling Castle during the reign of Mary, Queen of Scots. He was a member of the Murray of Tullibardine family, a prominent Perthshire kindred.

Murray served as a Gentleman of the Bedchamber to James V of Scotland. Following James V's death in 1542, Murray became embroiled in the complex political landscape surrounding the infant Mary, Queen of Scots.

His most significant role was as Captain and Keeper of Stirling Castle. This position placed him in charge of the Queen's childhood residence and, importantly, the person of the young Queen herself. Stirling Castle was a strategic location, and its control was vital to whichever faction held sway in Scotland. Murray held this position during a turbulent period, facing challenges from various noble families vying for power and influence over the Queen and the regency.

In 1543, Cardinal Beaton attempted to take control of the Queen at Stirling Castle, but Murray resisted. During his time as keeper, the Queen was kept secure and protected.

He was succeeded as Keeper of Stirling Castle by Sir John Stirling of Keir.

William Murray died in 1562. The exact circumstances of his death are not comprehensively documented, but his passing occurred during a period of ongoing political instability in Scotland.
