William Kent (jurist)

William Kent (1802-1861) was an American jurist and professor of law. He was the son of James Kent, a renowned Chancellor of New York, and followed in his father's footsteps, achieving distinction in the legal field.

Born in New York City, Kent graduated from Yale College in 1820. He initially practiced law in New York City and then served as a judge of the Circuit Court of Common Pleas for Putnam County.

Kent succeeded his father as professor of law at Columbia College (now Columbia University) in 1847, a position he held until his death in 1861. He was known for his erudition and his commitment to the principles of equity jurisprudence. He was also a strong advocate for the codification of law.

Kent’s major written works include an abridgement of his father's Commentaries on American Law, which was published in 1840, contributing significantly to the wider accessibility of this influential legal text. He also published A Commentary on American Law (1854), which was considered a valuable contribution to legal scholarship. He was respected for his intellect and his influence on legal education.
