William Henry Leigh (merchant)

William Henry Leigh (born circa 1817, died August 21, 1871) was a prominent merchant and politician in Mobile, Alabama, during the 19th century. He emigrated from England to the United States as a young man and established himself as a successful cotton factor and commission merchant.

Leigh was a partner in the firm of Hewlett, Leigh & Co., later Leigh & Co., which played a significant role in the cotton trade of the region. He was actively involved in the economic life of Mobile, contributing to its growth as a major port city. He also served as British Vice-Consul for Mobile for many years, representing British interests in the area.

Beyond his business activities, Leigh was also involved in local politics. He served as an alderman in Mobile, demonstrating his commitment to civic affairs and public service. He was a well-respected member of the Mobile community and was known for his integrity and business acumen. His obituary in the Mobile Register highlighted his significant contributions to the city's economic and social landscape. His sons continued his legacy in the cotton business.
