William Haile (New Hampshire politician)

William Haile (born August 13, 1807, died July 28, 1876) was an American manufacturer and politician from New Hampshire. He served as the 25th Governor of New Hampshire from 1857 to 1859.

Born in Chesterfield, New Hampshire, Haile engaged in manufacturing, specifically woolens, in Hinsdale. A Democrat, he served in the New Hampshire House of Representatives in 1843 and 1844. He also served in the New Hampshire Senate in 1849 and 1850, acting as President of the Senate in the latter year. He was elected Governor of New Hampshire in 1857 and served two one-year terms. During his time as governor, a significant issue was the slavery question, which dominated national politics and affected state-level discussions as well.

After his governorship, Haile continued his involvement in manufacturing and community affairs in Hinsdale. He died in Hinsdale, New Hampshire, and is buried there.
