William Dalrymple (politician, born 1678)
William Dalrymple (baptized 14 July 1678 – died 1744) was a Scottish politician and landowner. He was the second son of Sir John Dalrymple, 1st Baronet of Killoch, and his wife Elizabeth Hay, daughter of Sir John Hay of Hayston, 1st Baronet.
Dalrymple represented Ayrshire in the Parliament of Scotland from 1702 until the Act of Union in 1707. Following the union, he was a Member of Parliament for Ayrshire in the Parliament of Great Britain from 1707 to 1710 and again from 1715 to 1722. He held the office of King’s Advocate from 1714 to 1720.
He married Penelope Crichton, Countess of Dumfries, daughter of Charles Crichton, 5th Earl of Dumfries and Lady Sophia Fairholm, in 1717. They had at least one child, William Crichton-Dalrymple, 5th Earl of Dumfries.
