William Butler (1759–1821)
William Butler (1759–1821) was an American military officer who served during the American Revolutionary War, the Northwest Indian War, and the War of 1812. He was born in Ireland in 1759 and emigrated to Pennsylvania with his family.
During the American Revolution, Butler served as an officer in the Continental Army. He participated in several key battles, including the Battle of Brandywine and the Battle of Germantown. He also served under General Anthony Wayne in the Northwest Indian War, fighting against Native American tribes in the Ohio Territory.
Butler continued his military career into the War of 1812, rising to the rank of Colonel. He commanded troops in the defense of New Orleans.
Following his military service, Butler became a prominent citizen of Louisiana. He died in 1821. He is often confused with other figures named William Butler, necessitating careful attention to birth and death dates.
