Whitechapel (London County Council constituency)
Whitechapel was a constituency returning one member to the London County Council (LCC). It was located in the East End of London and covered the area roughly corresponding to the civil parish and former Metropolitan Borough of Whitechapel.
The constituency was created in 1889 by the Local Government Act 1888. It was abolished in 1949 upon the creation of the Metropolitan Borough of Stepney, being replaced by the two-member Stepney constituency.
Politically, Whitechapel was a working-class district and generally returned candidates from left-leaning parties. The Progressive Party, which was aligned with the Liberal Party and later the Labour Party, held the seat for most of its existence. Occasionally, Moderate Party (Conservative) or independent candidates were elected.
Significant figures who represented Whitechapel on the London County Council included influential local politicians and social reformers, reflecting the concerns and character of the area.
