Unforgiven (TV series)
Unforgiven is a British television drama miniseries written by Sally Wainwright and directed by David Evans. It was originally broadcast on ITV in January 2009, and later aired internationally.
The series stars Suranne Jones as Ruth Slater, a woman released from prison after serving a 15-year sentence for the murder of two policemen. The narrative follows Ruth as she attempts to rebuild her life and reconnect with her younger sister, Katie, who was adopted as a child after the murders. Ruth's efforts are complicated by the lingering animosity and judgment from the community, and by the vengeful actions of the victims' sons, who seek retribution for their parents' deaths.
The series explores themes of forgiveness, redemption, and the lasting impact of violence. It examines the psychological toll of imprisonment and the challenges faced by ex-offenders reintegrating into society. The narrative structure interweaves Ruth's present-day struggles with flashbacks providing context to the original crime and its aftermath.
The miniseries was generally well-received by critics, praising Jones' performance and Wainwright's writing. It was nominated for and won several awards, including a Royal Television Society Award for Best Drama Series.
