Under Two Flags (1922 film)

Under Two Flags is a 1922 American silent romantic drama film directed by Tod Browning and starring Priscilla Dean, James Kirkwood, and John Davidson. It is based on the 1867 novel Under Two Flags by Ouida (the pen name of Maria Louise Ramé). The film is a melodrama set against the backdrop of the French Foreign Legion in Algeria.

The story centers around Cigarette (Priscilla Dean), a vivacious and fiercely independent canteen girl who is devoted to the Legionnaires. She becomes entangled in the life of Bertie Cecil (James Kirkwood), an English nobleman falsely accused of forgery who has joined the Legion to escape prosecution. Cigarette falls in love with Bertie and risks her life to protect him and prove his innocence. The film involves themes of sacrifice, honor, and the clash between social classes.

The 1922 version is one of several film adaptations of Ouida's novel. Earlier versions were released in 1912, 1916, and later in 1936. The 1922 film is considered lost.
