Umedalen

Umedalen is a district in Umeå, Sweden, primarily known for the Umedalens skulpturpark (Umedalen Sculpture Park), a large outdoor contemporary art museum. The sculpture park is located on the grounds of the former Umedalen Psychiatric Hospital.

The area formerly housed a large psychiatric hospital, which operated from 1934 to 1996. Following the hospital's closure, the land and buildings were redeveloped. Parts of the former hospital have been repurposed, while others have been demolished to make way for new housing and other developments.

The Umedalens skulpturpark was established in 1994 by Galleri Andersson/Sandström and has since become a prominent cultural attraction. It features works by internationally recognized artists, including Louise Bourgeois, Tony Cragg, and Jaume Plensa. The park offers a blend of art, nature, and history, attracting visitors interested in both contemporary sculpture and the area's past. The sculptures are situated throughout the park's natural landscape, creating a unique and engaging experience.

In addition to the sculpture park, Umedalen features residential areas, businesses, and green spaces. It is connected to other parts of Umeå by public transportation.
