Jeppe på bjerget (1981 film)
Jeppe på bjerget is a 1981 Danish film adaptation of Ludvig Holberg's satirical play Jeppe på Bjerget eller Den forvandlede Bonde (Jeppe of the Hill, or The Transformed Peasant). The film was directed by Kaspar Rostrup.
The story follows Jeppe, a peasant known for his heavy drinking and mistreatment at the hands of his wife, Nille. One day, a Baron decides to play a cruel prank on Jeppe. While Jeppe is passed out drunk, the Baron's men move him to the Baron's bed and dress him in fine clothes. When Jeppe awakens, he is treated as a nobleman, but is then tricked back into his former state, leading to humorous and ultimately tragic consequences as he grapples with the illusion of power and the reality of his social standing.
The 1981 film is known for its dramatic interpretation of the classic play and features a strong performance from Buster Larsen in the titular role of Jeppe. It explores themes of social class, power, and the human condition. The film remains a significant adaptation of Holberg's work, recognized for its depiction of societal critique and human fallibility.
