Santiago (footballer, born 1976)
Santiago Denia Sánchez, commonly known as Santiago (born March 9, 1976), is a Spanish retired footballer who played as a central defender, and is a current football manager.
During his playing career, Santiago spent the vast majority of it with Atlético Madrid, representing the club in both La Liga and the Segunda División. He progressed through the Atlético Madrid youth system, making his first-team debut in 1995. He played for Atlético Madrid for over a decade, becoming a key player in their defense. He was known for his strong tackling, aerial ability, and leadership qualities.
After leaving Atlético Madrid, Santiago had brief spells with Albacete Balompié and Hércules CF before retiring from professional football.
Following his retirement, Santiago transitioned into coaching. He has worked extensively with the Spanish national youth teams, managing various age groups from the under-16s to the under-21s. He has achieved considerable success in these roles, leading Spain to victory in the UEFA European Under-19 Championship in 2015 and the UEFA European Under-17 Championship in 2017. He also guided the Spanish under-21 team to the final of the 2023 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. Santiago is highly regarded for his tactical acumen and his ability to develop young talent.
