USS Wichita (AOR-1)
The USS Wichita (AOR-1) was the lead ship of her class of seven underway replenishment oilers built for the United States Navy. She was designed to provide fuel, lubricants, fleet freight, and other supplies to Navy ships at sea, allowing them to remain operational for extended periods without returning to port. Commissioned in 1969, the USS Wichita served actively in the Pacific Fleet, participating in various exercises and deployments around the world. She played a significant role in supporting naval operations during the Vietnam War and subsequent peacetime missions. The USS Wichita was decommissioned in 1993 and later disposed of. Her service life exemplified the vital role of underway replenishment in maintaining the global reach and operational readiness of the U.S. Navy. The AOR-1 class was succeeded by the larger Henry J. Kaiser-class of replenishment oilers.
