USS Turaco (AMc-55)
The USS Turaco (AMc-55) was an Accentor-class coastal minesweeper acquired by the U.S. Navy for the dangerous task of removing mines from minefields laid in coastal waterways during World War II.
Turaco (AMc-55) was laid down on 29 January 1941 by the Gibbs Gas Engine Co., Jacksonville, Florida; launched on 29 November 1941; sponsored by Mrs. William J. Brennan; and commissioned on 29 April 1942, Lt. (jg.) James L. Holcomb, USNR, in command.
Following shakedown, Turaco reported to the Commander, Eastern Sea Frontier, for duty. Assigned to the 3d Naval District, she operated in the Long Island Sound area, conducting minesweeping operations and antisubmarine patrols from May 1942 to December 1945. She performed these duties primarily in the approaches to New York Harbor.
Decommissioned on 21 December 1945, Turaco was struck from the Navy List on 8 January 1946 and transferred to the Maritime Commission for disposal on 3 July 1946.
