Saenuri Party (2017)
The Saenuri Party (์๋๋ฆฌ๋น, Saenuri-dang) was a South Korean conservative political party. In 2017, the party underwent a major transformation and name change in response to a significant political scandal involving then-President Park Geun-hye.
The Saenuri Party's roots can be traced back to the Democratic Liberal Party formed in 1990. Over the years, it underwent several name changes, reflecting shifts in the political landscape and attempts to rebrand. Notable previous names include the Grand National Party (GNP). The Saenuri Party, meaning "New Frontier Party," was adopted in 2012.
By 2017, the party was embroiled in a crisis due to the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye. The scandal severely damaged the Saenuri Party's public image and led to internal divisions. Following the impeachment and subsequent arrest of Park, there was a widespread call for the party to distance itself from the scandal and reform.
In February 2017, the Saenuri Party officially changed its name to the Liberty Korea Party (์์ ํ๊ตญ๋น, Jayu Hanguk-dang) in an effort to break with its past and rebuild public trust. The name change was accompanied by a new party leadership and a pledge to pursue conservative values while addressing the concerns raised by the scandal. The transition from the Saenuri Party to the Liberty Korea Party marked a significant turning point in South Korean politics.
