USS Tang

The name USS Tang refers to two submarines of the United States Navy:

  • USS Tang (SS-306): A Balao-class submarine that served in World War II. She was one of the most successful submarines in the Pacific Theater, sinking 33 Japanese ships according to official records. The Tang was commanded by Lieutenant Commander Richard H. O'Kane and was sunk by her own malfunctioning torpedo on October 24, 1944, during her fifth war patrol. Some of her crew, including O'Kane, survived and were taken prisoner by the Japanese.

  • USS Tang (SS-563): A Tang-class submarine, the lead ship of her class. She was commissioned in 1951 and served extensively during the Cold War, participating in numerous fleet exercises and deployments. She was notable for her high submerged speed and advanced sonar capabilities. In 1980, she was transferred to the Turkish Navy and renamed TCG Denizalti Yildirim (S-330).
