USS Kansas City (LCS-22)

The USS Kansas City (LCS-22) is an Independence-class littoral combat ship of the United States Navy. She is the eleventh Independence-class ship and the second ship to be named after Kansas City, Missouri. Littoral combat ships are designed for operations near shore and represent a departure from traditional naval combat roles, focusing on speed, adaptability, and mission-specific modularity.

The USS Kansas City is designed for a variety of missions including mine countermeasures, anti-submarine warfare, and surface warfare. Her modular design allows for rapid reconfiguration to adapt to different mission requirements through the use of mission packages. Key features include a large flight deck for helicopter operations, a side ramp for launching and recovering boats, and a large interior volume for mission module storage and operation.

She was built by Austal USA in Mobile, Alabama. Her keel was laid down on May 18, 2018, and she was launched on June 22, 2019. The USS Kansas City was commissioned on June 20, 2020, in a virtual ceremony due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She is assigned to Littoral Combat Ship Squadron One (LCSRON ONE).
