USS Drum (SS-228)

The USS Drum (SS-228) is a Gato-class submarine of the United States Navy. She is credited with sinking fifteen Japanese ships, totaling 80,580 tons, during World War II, making her one of the most successful U.S. submarines of the war in terms of tonnage sunk.

History: Launched in May 1941 and commissioned in November 1941, shortly before the attack on Pearl Harbor, Drum conducted thirteen war patrols throughout the Pacific theater. These patrols took her from the waters around Japan to the South Pacific and beyond, where she engaged in both offensive and defensive operations. She participated in actions such as attacking enemy convoys, laying mines, and conducting reconnaissance.

Significant Engagements: While her entire wartime record is notable, some of Drum's more significant engagements include successful attacks on Japanese destroyers, tankers, and troop transports. Her contribution to the Allied war effort earned her twelve battle stars.

Post-War Service: After the war, Drum was decommissioned in 1946 and placed in the Atlantic Reserve Fleet.

Museum Ship: In 1969, Drum was opened to the public as a museum ship at Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile, Alabama. Visitors can tour the submarine and learn about the daily lives of the crew during wartime. She stands as a testament to the bravery and sacrifice of the submariners who served in World War II.

Awards: In addition to her twelve battle stars, USS Drum was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation for her outstanding performance in combat.

Fate: Currently, USS Drum remains on display at Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile, Alabama. She is a National Historic Landmark.
