James Boggs (general)
James Boggs was a brigadier general in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. He served primarily in staff roles, playing a key part in logistics and supply for the Confederate war effort.
Born in New Brunswick, Canada, Boggs graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1834. He initially served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He resigned his commission in 1861 at the outbreak of the Civil War to join the Confederacy.
Boggs was appointed chief engineer of the Department of Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi. He later served as chief engineer of the Department of Tennessee. He was promoted to brigadier general in 1863 and assigned to the Trans-Mississippi Department, where he continued to serve in logistical and engineering capacities. After the war, Boggs returned to civil life.
His contributions to the Confederate war effort centered on his organizational and engineering skills, which were crucial in attempting to maintain supply lines and infrastructure. He is less known for battlefield command than for his administrative abilities.
