USS Altair (AK-257)

USS Altair (AK-257) was a Crater-class cargo ship commissioned by the U.S. Navy during World War II. Named after the brightest star in the constellation Aquila, it served as a vital supply and transport vessel in the Pacific Theater.

Altair was laid down by the Kaiser Shipbuilding Company, Inc., in Richmond, California, and launched in 1944. After commissioning, the ship was assigned to transport cargo, troops, and equipment to various locations throughout the Pacific, supporting Allied operations against Japan. Its duties included delivering crucial supplies to forward operating bases and returning damaged equipment and personnel to rear areas.

The Altair played a significant role in logistical support operations throughout the latter stages of the war, contributing to the Allied advance. Following the end of hostilities, Altair participated in Operation Magic Carpet, the large-scale effort to return American service members home from overseas.

After its service in Operation Magic Carpet, Altair was decommissioned and placed in reserve. It was later struck from the Naval Vessel Register. The ship's ultimate fate is a matter of public record, generally involving scrapping or transfer to another entity. The Crater-class cargo ships, like Altair, provided crucial support to the war effort through their logistical capabilities.
