Thunderhawk (video game)

Thunderhawk is a series of combat flight simulator video games developed and published primarily by Core Design. The series focuses on piloting a fictional advanced attack helicopter, often referred to as the Thunderhawk AH-73, in various combat scenarios across the globe.

The first game in the series, titled simply Thunderhawk (released in North America as AH-73 Thunderhawk), was released in 1992 for the Amiga and Atari ST platforms. It established the core gameplay loop of completing missions involving destroying enemy ground and air units, defending friendly forces, and reconnaissance.

Subsequent entries in the Thunderhawk series expanded upon the original's gameplay, often introducing new weapons, enemies, and environments. The series saw releases on other platforms, including the Sega CD and PC.

Common elements throughout the Thunderhawk games include a heads-up display (HUD) providing critical flight information, a variety of weapon systems (typically including missiles, cannons, and rockets), and a mission briefing system that outlines objectives and provides tactical information. The games are generally known for their challenging gameplay and emphasis on realistic (for the time) helicopter flight physics.

While not as commercially successful as some other flight simulator franchises, the Thunderhawk series maintains a cult following among fans of the genre.
